In 1901, divers salvaging an ancient Roman shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera recovered a corroded, lumpish green mass of bronze and wood. Initially ignored in favor of beautiful statues and jewelry, this strange artifact would eventually turn out to be the most complex piece of technology surviving from the ancient world.
Known as the Antikythera Mechanism, it is now recognized as the world’s oldest known analog computer—dating back to over 2,000 years ago.

⚙️ A Masterpiece of Hellenistic Engineering
For nearly a century, scientists were baffled by what lay inside the calcified bronze. It wasn’t until the advent of high-resolution X-ray microtomography and 3D surface imaging that the mechanism’s true inner workings were revealed:
- The Gear System: The device contained a complex system of over 30 interlocking bronze gear wheels, a technology that historians believed didn’t emerge until the medieval cathedral clocks of Europe 1,500 years later.
- The Solar and Lunar Calendar: By turning a single hand crank, users could track the movements of the Sun, the phases of the Moon, and the positions of the five planets known to the ancient Greeks (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn).
- Predicting the Future: The back dials predicted solar and lunar eclipses with astonishing accuracy, even accounting for the Moon’s elliptical orbit (an astronomical discovery attributed to Hipparchus).

The existence of the Antikythera Mechanism proves that ancient Greek civilization possessed a level of mechanical engineering that was completely lost to history after the fall of Rome.
